Both the Mackenzie ice crossing and Tsiigehtchic Winter access road are on 72 hours notice but could close sooner if the weather changes.

A notice was released by the GNWT on April 30.

“Depending on weather conditions the Ice Bridges may close with little or no notice,” reads the notice. “Low clearance vehicles are not recommended to travel on the Peel and Mackenzie River ice crossings as well as the Tsiigehtchic access ice crossings at this time.

“Historical Statistics show the Peel River ice crossing was closed in early May, Mackenzie River ice crossing was closed on average about the second week in May (and) the Tsiigehtchic winter access was closed in early May.”

Work continues on the Iuvik-Tuktoyaktuk highway, particularly between kilometres 26 and 70. The notice cautions there are narrow sections of road between kilometres 26 and 30 and travellers should expect delays.

The Aklavik Ice Road is closed for the season.

“Please drive according to all road conditions, follow all speed limits, watch for workers and equipment working; and expect uneven surfaces, as well as slippery and narrow sections throughout all roads,” reads the notice. “Icy conditions and standing water patches throughout all roads this time of year. Remember to always use your headlights and seatbelts.”
