A fuel truck caught fire at the Det’on Cho Shell fuel station on Bristol Avenue Friday morning around 9 a.m.

Racing to respond to the emergency, the Yellowknife Fire Division (YKFD) and a bylaw officer were met with smoke and flames visible on and around the vehicle.

“The YKFD used a hose line to contain the fire to the fuel truck. With the assistance from the Airport Fire Department, who arrived on scene, the fire was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries reported and the fire was confined to the truck and the loading island,” said Abby Schelew, the city’s communication advisor.

As of press time, the cause of the fire was still unknown and the investigation is ongoing.

“We heard an explosion, and it was pretty apparent that there was a large fire,” said Evan Eastard, a salesperson at nearby Aurora Ford. “So everybody was quickly evacuated off the property.”

The RCMP have been notified by the city in case of criminal involvement in the incident.
