Jessica Marie Jerome, 20, died in a cabin outside of Yellowknife on Highway 3, May 13. The death is considered suspicious primarily because police are unsure yet how Jerome died. Jerome's family say they will remember her for the happy-go-lucky, independent and warm young woman she was.
'Forever young'
YELLOWKNIFER - As Chauna Gruben finished her Mother's Day dinner with her family she was given a horrifying surprise she wasn’t expecting, news that her 20-year-old daughter had died early that morning. "I was so sick to my stomach," Gruben said, remembering the moment she got the call. "It broke my heart." Jessica Marie Jerome died in a cabin outside of Yellowknife on Highway 3, May 13. Police were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. The death is being considered suspicious as police are unsure yet how Jerome died.

KIVALLIQ NEWS - Hundreds of students from all three schools in Rankin Inlet took part in an anti-bullying walk of awareness this past week. Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) incorporated the anti-bullying program into its school structure this year, and the program was responsible for the purchase of 810 pink shirts recently.

YELLOWKNIFER - Winners have been announced in the True North Ice Melt competition held by the Rotary Club of Yellowknife True North. Since mid-April, the club has been accepting guesses as to when exactly the bright-red 205-litre drum, dubbed the "Ice Device," would descend into the waters of Frame Lake. KIVALLIQ NEWS - Arviat ecotourism took another positive step forward with a unique trip out on the land earlier this month. The Arviat Community Ecotourism (ACE) initiative hosted another successful familiarization trip for participants to witness the caribou migration back onto the Barrens. Singer and songwriter Sophie Leger performed at Javaroma last Saturday night. The weekly jam was hosted by Folk on the Rocks, as they auditioned acoustic acts to fill the tweener sets and this years festival.

Looking for Tweeners
YELLOWKNIFER - Some Yellowknife musicians who are vying for a spot on one of the coveted stages at Folk on the Rocks may still have the chance to make it onto the main stage. The festival is currently looking for tweeners to play. A tweener act is an acoustic set that performs during sound setups and change-overs for scheduled bands. KIVALLIQ NEWS - Hundreds of friends and family members gathered at the Rankin Inlet community hall for Nunavut Arctic College's Kivalliq campus graduation ceremonies in Rankin this past week. At left: NAC president Mike Shouldice presents Elizabeth Avingaq with her management studies diploma.

YELLOWKNIFER - Northern Flair Beauty Salon owner Rhonda Larocque has never considered herself a shrewd businessperson, but that didn't stop her from taking an entrepreneurial opportunity when she saw it. Larocque was a hairstylist at Northern Flair in 1989 when her boss put the YK Centre beauty shop up for sale. The young hairdresser from Manitoba had been working at the salon since 1976, and wanted to keep her job.
