Housing cost-overruns a lesson in accountability

I find it most unfortunate, the situation the minister responsible for housing has found himself in!

In my view, any individual who has been given a portfolio with such heavy responsibility such as housing, should be absolutely aware of any and all expenditures and should ensure that the budget is monitored and adhered to.

There will undoubtedly be delays in the construction of much needed units across Nunavut and people will have to wait that much longer.

Along with this embarrassment, there seems to be finger pointing as well and this will not help the situation. This is a lesson of commitment, responsibility and the willingness to be transparent and accountable. I sincerely hope all the other ministers in the cabinet take note and make sure they do not fall into the same predicament!

This over-expenditure has implications, not only on the minister responsible, but on the department as a whole. Life above the 60th parallel is already the most expensive in Canada; we do not need to add any more strife or aggravation to what is already there.

My perception of a minister is that this individual would be totally involved and engaged in his or her department and always aware on a daily basis of what is or isn't happening in the department. I don't think a carry-over or bridge funding could even be considered by the finance department once this fiscal year has expired.

Many young families who are on the waiting list will have to "grin and bear it" while this whole situation is dealt with.

The government of Nunavut is still fairly new compared to other jurisdictions and is still going through growing pains, but this does not justify irresponsible conduct by any department. We must always remember that the government is of the people, for the people and elected by the people. This institution is not an alien organization; it is run by individuals who were deemed to be responsible and capable of carrying out the wishes and demands of the populace who elected them into office.

I hope this lesson drives home the significance of accountability and transparency.
