RANKIN INLET - The 2010 Midnight Sun Run in Rankin Inlet was a great success, according to event co-organizer Kelly Clark.

The run raised more than $8,000 this past week which will be divided among Rankin's three schools.

The money will be used to promote healthy living for students.

The event featured participants taking part in a five-kilometre walk or run. The event was sponsored by the Kivalliq Chamber of Commerce and Shear Minerals Ltd.

Companies paid a $1,000 registration fee for the run, while families paid $5 and individuals $1 to take part.

Clark said the schools could decide to use the money on snack programs or gym equipment.

She said it will be up to the school principals to decide where the money can be best spent.

"This was the second time this event was held in Rankin," said Clark.

"It first went in 2008, with the money raised used to buy sneakers for local kids.

"There was a bit of a mix up with the sneakers, and it took a long time for them to be all handed out properly.

"That long delay may have been why nobody decided to do the run last year."

Clark said there were about 75 participants at this year's run.

She said organizers were happy with the amount of money raised at the event.

"We're very grateful for the corporate donations we received from First Air, Areva Resources, Shear Minerals, KR Manson, the Rankin fitness gym, Rankin aerobics group, Peregrine Diamonds Ltd., Nuna Logistics, Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping and the Rankin Inlet Legion.

"We also received great help from our recreation department, while the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet donated the facility, Canadian North donated prizes, and A&K Canteen and Catering donated food and supplies to host and run the barbecue after the run."

Clark said she hopes the run will be larger in 2011.

She said the community of Rankin Inlet always shows its generosity when money is being raised for a worthy cause.

"The chamber will definitely sponsor the run again next year, and it would like to see it become an annual event.

"I'm sure Shear Minerals, once I do up its report, will be back in the boat again next year.

"First Air was a big sponsor this year and, from what I understand, it's also looking forward to helping host the event again next year."
