Latest development

Tyhee Development Corporation has begun its annual resupply via its recently finished winter road.

The road leads to Tyhee's gold project, located approximately 90 kilometres north of Yellowknife.

The resupply will see crucial goods like fuel shipped to the main drilling project and should be completed by the end of March.

The winter road also provides access to other nearby targets like BigSky, Clan Lake and Goodwin Lake Zones, where drilling recently resumed after a brief break due to extreme cold.

On the road

According to the latest update, the Tibbitt to Contwoyto winter road has accepted a total of 4,202 northbound loads so far.

"We don't expect to accommodate as many loads this year," said Diavik Diamond Mines spokesman Tom Hoefer, who attributed the downturn partly to De Beers' Snap Lake mine now being built and in production.

Last year was a record one for the road, he added. Almost 11,000 north-bound loads were hauled before the road closed in early April.

Premier talks to business crowd

Premier Floyd Roland was the guest speaker at the Yk Chamber of Commerce's annual business luncheon, held on Friday at the Explorer hotel, and it didn't take long before his speech turned to financial matters.

Roland spoke about the difficulties his government is encountering as it wades through the upcoming budget, due this summer.

In a brief question and answer session afterward, Mayor Gord Van Tighem asked the premier if he would involve local businesses in his efforts to draw up a business plan for the NWT, something that had been done in the past, but is not being done now, he added.

The premier replied he would.

Diavik's fourth quarter

Diavik Diamond Mine, on the heels of a capital influx of $563 from its joint-venture partners for its move into underground mining, released its 2007 fourth quarter results recently.

Quarterly production from the A154 south pipe reached 2.9 million carats, bringing the total 2007 diamond production to 11.9 million carats.

One lost time injury and five medical treatment injuries brought the total for 2007 to eight lost time injuries and 11 medical treatments. The injury stats in 2007 represent a four per cent improvement from 2006.
