Business Briefs Andrew Livingstone E-mail: business@nnsl.com Wednesday, November 18, 2009 Previous columns Geoscience Forum underway The 37th Annual Geoscience Forum kicked off yesterday, bringing hundreds of geoscience representatives from all over Canada to Yellowknife. The three-day event, which wraps up tomorrow, is focused on a variety of topics including climate change, energy in the North and the regulatory process and mineral exploration. Dr. Dan Marshall, of Simon Fraser University will present to delegates this afternoon as the keynote speaker. He will be talking about the Mountain River Emerald Occurrence in the Northwest Territories. 840 delegates attended the Geoscience forum last year, down slightly from 2007 when 893 attended. Small business internship program Industry Canada is offering an internship program to small and medium-sized businesses across the three territories to help improve and market Northern businesses. The program will help expand participants' knowledge of information and communication technology. The program will allow businesses with 500 or less employees to hire post-secondary student interns who are well-versed in conducting business and marketing on-line. The Government of Canada will reimburse 75 per cent of the eligible wages and related expenses such as statutory employee benefits, up to a total of $10,000. Safety course registration ends today Registration for the Yellowknife Safety Education courses ends today for companies and workers interested in improving their understanding of safety in the workplace. Two courses will be offered in workplace safety. Go Safe: Work Smart will run from Nov. 23 to 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the fifth floor safety classroom in the Centre Square Tower. The second course, Work Smart Facilitator, will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Nov. 26. Work Smart must be completed before attending the facilitator course. For more information see the Workers' Safety and Compensation Board website. Fish lovers rejoice! Bullocks' Bistro is back open for business after being closed for a month-and-a-half. Bullocks' opened its doors again last Friday, much to the delight of fish lovers around the city. The restaurant will be open from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m.
