Who is making the bannock?
Cece Hodgson-McCauley Guest comment Monday, November 9, 2009 Previous columns So, Ted Hughes has rendered his decision. He judged our premier's behaviour forgivable! What was there to forgive in the first place for heavens sake, we aren't gods, we must accept our mortality. The sad part of all of this hunger and excitement of gossip is no one thinks of the family that is involved and the hurt and damages. The big question from the majority will be, what was the cost? Anything to do with lawyers costs an arm and a leg. Time to turn a new page, let's demand from our elected people, that they must conduct themselves like business people which is what they are! They are in the business of developing our Territory, and there is a lot to develop. Number one on GNWT's agenda should be radio CBC - the station is so frustrating at times. I'm tempted to throw my shoe at my radio, you get tired of TV because they are repetitive, but then, the radio is the same boring. Our radio station in Aklavik was more exciting, CHAK - it was managed by volunteers in town, they gave some news, played requests, sent messages etc; and everyone listened! The high and mighty of today may say - oh, those were primitive times, before the government moved into the NWT. Well, let me tell you, as a person who experienced the whole transaction of primitive to modern times. I still feel and believe we are still in square one! The saviour's people who come to educate to create a better life for us primitive people, they are all doing fine, good paying jobs with benefits coming out of their ears. The advantage of the education rules, while the primitive people they come to save are still in the primitive ages, you must be blind if you don't see it. So the GNWT must get down to business and start governing like they should. The number one issue must be communications, and I don't think the legislative procedures on TV is helping people to understand anything, all of this pomposity of "thank you, Mr. Speaker," a million times during the session is getting on the primitive people's uneducated nerves! CBC should have more phone-ins and cross-territory check ups. And we could do with government newsletters in the newspapers - they can sure reach us through newspapers because we won't be involved in big million dollar deals, like that $42 or so million loan to an airline company in Ontario! By the way, weren't the regular MLAs involved in this transaction? No single minister should do this on his own! We should all question our own MLAs on the loan. I'm still mad as hell over this and I'm sure many of you are. I could sure use that money in Norman Wells for the young generation, or to start a communications system for the whole North, even Nunavut. We have a good premier, let's support him - and we must respect our MLAs by communicating with them. Let them know what you want, they can't read your minds! You know the old saying, you deserve the government you have. So if you are not happy with your government, it is your fault, that's why I'm always questioning them. There is so much to look into, just read the newspapers. Caribou are declining, the gun registry is in the news again, a waste of time! Arctic sovereignty will be moving fast in the new year, and of course the highway - now that the pipeline is in question. No two ways about it, 2010 is going to be exciting and moving fast in many directions. The Olympics is on my mind a lot, who is making the bannock? The world will be tasting the NWT bannock and we don't want bannock like hard rocks, right? - Cece Hodgson-McCauley is the founding chief of the Inuvik Dene band and will remain honourary chief for life.
