Welcome to Cambridge Bay. It has been a very, very busy summer for everyone, camping, fishing, hunting, and especially for those who have hunted whales.

There have been narwhal, beluga and killer whales around the Bay. Cambridge Bay has never seen so many whales before. A number of years back there was beluga whales spotted swimming around the Bay and out at Gravel Pit. We think the killer whales chased all the whales to the Cambridge Bay area.

The local HTO, Ekaluktutiak Hunters and Trappers Organization, has managed to get 10 tags for whale hunters and so far nine have been landed. The emergency tags were received from the Kitikmeot Regional Wildlife Board. As it has never been needed before in Cambridge Bay, special recognition to the Ekaluktutiak HTO Manager Brenda Sitatak for her immediate response to this important time of our life for the community of Cambridge Bay.

When the first whales were spotted, there was so much excitement in the whole community and everyone went to watch whales down at the shore, that night the whales were first spotted. It was the first time in a long time that the waters were so calm, and the weather was so beautiful. There were many residents whale watching all along the shore, up to the bridge and further by the old townsite. It brought the whole community together as one, for both Inuit and non-Inuit residents. So many people were standing together, excited, both young and older, lots of cameras flashing. boats one and another going out to try and get a whale and assist with the hunters that were out there. All the successful whalers shared their whale with the rest of the community. Koana to all the whalers for sharing and hopefully those who were unable to get some muktuk will find some from others in the community. Enjoy the fresh muktuk everyone.

It's back to school for the young students and teachers and principals once again. This year school started Aug. 18 and school ends June 13, 2012, with Christmas and Easter breaks etc. Congratulations to all the students who went back to school. This year Kullik Ilihakvik Elementary registered approximately 229 students and more to come as Arctic College students and their families continue to arrive for their classes. Also at Kiilinik, students continue to register, many that have returned have also started classes same day as Kullik also.

Each year when school starts they go out on day trips while the weather is still nice. So far students from Kullik have been out to Gravel Pit, Augustus Hills and river to enjoy fishing, berry picking and playing outdoor games with elders as their guests. This year there were so many blueberries out at Augustus Hills, as we did have a warm summer, and therefore berry picking was plenty for all.

The breakfast program is also underway once again at the Wellness Centre on school mornings from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Many students were able also during school hours to go whale watching at the shore with their teachers. I saw Jeff Avery's class out one day, all the kids were so excited, they have also been able to learn more about whales at school.

One of the hunters who got a whale donated some whale meat, muktuk, flippers and blubber to Kullik so they can see it all with their own eyes what it looks like. Kullik has been also busy with instilling traditional and respecting values - TUNNGANARNIQ - being open, welcoming and inclusive, and INUUQATIGIISIARNIQ - respecting others, relationships, and caring for people. We hope all students and staff will learn so much from these very important programs that are offered at the schools across Nunavut. Congratulations to the schools for believing in the values and traditions which need to be taught both at home and school and work.

I wish you all well, also to those who will be attending colleges down south or in the North, take good care of each other, stay in school. Go see a guidance counsellor or an education representative to see if there is room for you if you are still wondering to attend school either elementary or high school level, college or university. That's the only way to begin and continue to help yourself. Even if it's for a job, do good for yourself, because if you need a helping hand, we will walk with you and try and help. There's so much ahead in life for us all.

With many ships and big and small sailboats and a raft coming to the Northwest Passage, it has been a busy summer down at the dock and the waters here in Cambridge Bay. We have had a couple of barges arriving, delivering fuel, goods, lots of vehicles and heavy equipment, building supplies, goods for the stores, and food and houseshold items for residents and many more other goodies. Soon the stores will be stocked up again with many new items on the shelves, new trucks running around. We even have new water and sewage trucks too, so exciting for everyone. It was nice to see old friends and relatives who work on the boats. Lots of different sailboats from different countries like Austria, Australia, Russia, USA, and other places are also arriving. We had couple of big cruise ships bringing in tourists from different countries getting guided tours of our little community.

We look forward now to Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and more. Have a great time now till winter sets in.

God be with you son, you are dearly missed every day.
