Soccer, anyone?

A free drop-in soccer program for boys ages 13 and 14 is set to begin tomorrow.

Games will be at the Range Lake North field every Thursday starting tomorrow at 5 p.m. until July 23.

If you can't make it then, you can go to William McDonald field on Mondays beginning July 6, also starting at 5 p.m.

Organizer Suzanne Montreuil said those interested in playing should bring two jerseys, one red and one blue, in order to help with dividing up the teams.

There is no cost to play at any location. If you're interested in helping out or refereeing, contact Montreuil for more details.

Outdoor hoops

Some basketball players in town will be celebrating Canada Day by playing in a 3-on-3 tournament at Mildred Hall School.

The games will be played on the outdoor courts beginning at 10 a.m., said co-organizer Michael Callas.

"We'll have men's, women's, and mixed division available for players 15 and under as well as 16 and over," he said.

The champions in each division will receive cash prizes and there are also door prizes as well. Admission is free for spectators.

Volleyball at the beach

Yk Beach Volleyball is scheduled to hold its Canada Day Tournament today at Long Lake beach.

"Players will be signing in at 10 a.m. and games are expected to begin at around 11 a.m.," said Becca Kroeger, president of Yk Beach Volleyball.

Kroeger said the finals will begin at around 4 p.m. and all games will take place, rain or shine.

"The only thing stopping us will be lightning," she said.

Kroeger said there are eight women's teams and five men's teams competing for the title in each division.

Entertainment will be provided on-site by the Bush League DJ trio.

Established in 1945, News/North covered the 61 communities comprising the Northwest Territories, a 1,400.000 square mile region north of the 60th parallel. The region made up the present Northwest Territories, plus the area which, in April 1999, became the new territory of Nunavut. Since then, News/North has evolved into two separate publications, each serving its respective territory. In addition, the Yellowknifer, Deh Cho Drum, Inuvik Drum and Kivalliq News serve regional interests in both territories.
