Welcome to Cambridge Bay. We are now getting lots and lots of puddles everywhere. Time to pull out your rubber boots now that the Frolics are over for another year. Yes, snow is starting to melt since we are finally getting nice warm weather but not much sunshine lately as we have had too many cloudy days and whiteouts lately.
The Omingmak Frolics are now over for another year and a big thank you to the Frolics committee members who worked hard preparing and organizing the events -- koana very much to Sarah McDonald our Recreation Co-ordinator, Jason Tologanak, Dave Allen, William Autut, Stephani Briscoe and Anthony Otokiak and all the volunteers also co-ordinating the games and different events. For the community games, thanks to Albert Okhina, Christa Lee Koaha and Patricia Angulalik. For the snowmobiles races, a big thank you to Derek Elias, Linda Klengenberg and Fred Pedersen, and Sammy Ehaloak.
One of our big sponsors this year was Canadian North and thank you for the "Some Serious Fun" events and hope you had a good tour of the Kitikmeot and good luck to all those who entered to win a four-wheeler and a trip for two anywhere Canadian North flies in the Kitikmeot region. This year's lucky winner of the raffle ticket draw trip for two in Cambridge Bay was won by Eddie Maniyogina. Lucky Eddie, I was trying to ask him and Martina when are they leaving for a nice trip, but they were too excited!
Also this year Fright Factor returned and some brave and energetic contestants competed. The contestants had to take part in tasks: pick up the most flags while being pulled by a snowmobile, sled and rope; chop all their hair off - even the female contestants had to do this and Bernice and Anne were very brave to get all their hair shaved off; and dance really sexy - where the male contestants Jason Akoluk and Chris Kalluk had to dress as females, it sure made people laugh with the boys dressed as girls! And the last task was to eating caribou parts and one of the parts was the caribou ohok.
This year's Fright Factor winner was Anne Isnor. Anne won $5,000.
This year's King and Queen and Prince and Princess contestants sold lots of raffle tickets raising money for the Frolics and made quite a bit of money. Thank you to all those who sold tickets, some good hard work out there. This year's King was Jason Akoluk, Queen Doris Angohiatok, Prince was Gavin Greenley and Princess was Paluk Neglak.
The King and Queen each won two return tickets to Edmonton from Cambridge Bay on Canadian North. The Prince and Princess each won laptops! Wow! Lucky Gavin and Paluk. Enjoy your wonderful gifts! We also had a giant bingo and the jackpot was $10,000 and the lucky winner was Natasha Neglak.
This year the frolics focused on youth activities and we had some special guests come in to entertain our kids. It was so wonderful to see so many happy smiling faces and they just loved Oh-Oh the Clown. Dino the Magician showed some magic tricks also and our Elders just couldn't figure out how he did it and also our kids too of course.
Comedian Andrew Grose from Edmonton entertained audiences at the Elks Lodge and also the adults with dinner and live entertainment evening. Everyone who attended the comedy shows laughed so much their stomachs were sore. Another big thank you goes to Elks Lodge for their help in sponsoring to bring them up! The KIA also helped sponsor Kids Entertainment Night and a big thank you to them also.
Snowmobile races were very popular like every year. Congratulations go to Joe Tikhak Jr and Derek Elias! Way to go, boys! You made us proud! No matter if you lose, still be sportsmanlike.
Every year the Brian Angohiatok Memorial Award is given to the racer, male or female, who have shown sportsmanship and respect and this year's recipient is George NAIKAK Hakungak. Congratulations Naikak!
He was so emotional when he received this award and gave a very moving speech saying how proud and happy and honoured he was to receive this special award. Naikak says he is retiring from racing now and it is time for the younger racers to take over. Thanks to all our hard working crew for making the races safe and enjoyable by all. We even had a seven year-old winning the 120 race and Kanen Evalik won $40! Right on Kanen!
More thank yous going to Elks Lodge also for the delicious pancake breakfast! Thanks to so many other residents who made the Frolics so much fun, especially for our kids! There are so many volunteers to mention, KOANAKPIAK! Without you, the frolics would have never happened and may you all be blessed and we will remember all the fun we had! Take care everyone!
Happy belated birthday greetings to POALONA, Anna Nahogaloak, Margo Neglak, Tigoatiak. Hope you all had a nice birthday! God Bless!
