The ice on the Mackenzie River started breaking near the Merv Hardie ferry crossing Sunday, although the ferry isn't in just yet. According to Earl Blacklock, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation, ice remains further down near Great Slave Lake but based upon historical experience, the ferry is usually back in operation one month after the ice road is out. Blacklock said the road closed April 12 this year, so it is possible to have the ferry running by next week. - Alix McNaught Newfoundlanders meet The Newfoundland and Labrador society is holding a preliminary meeting today in the boardroom of the Multiplex at 7 p.m. The meeting entails a discussion of the mission of the society, development of membership and possible upcoming events. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. - Cara Loverock Spring cleaning The city's annual Spring Clean-Up takes place May 12 to 15. For the duration of that week, the city will collect residents' large items free of charge. Those wishing to have items picked up must fill out fill out a form, which is available at city hall, the landfill gatehouse and online, and submit it by noon on May 12. Some restrictions still apply; a list of them is available on the city 's website. Amnesty Week will run from May 19 to 25, for residential drop-off only. During this time, the $5 Solid Waste Facility fee will be waived; however, the three-bag limit and other tipping fees continue to apply. - Alix McNaught City conducts library survey The city is conducting a citizen survey on the construction of a new library for 2013. Available on the city website, the survey is part of the city's study, which includes public meetings, workshops and interviews and is expected to be completed by late summer 2008.
