News Briefs: Wednesday, September 8, 2010 Union scholarships The Union of Northern Workers has awarded ten post-secondary scholarships valued at $3,000. This year's winners for the Josie Gould Memorial Scholarship are: Christina Boggis, Jessie Casebeer, Jeff Corey, Anton Debogorski, Bradley Hussey, James MacKenzie, Louise McLeod, Andrea McMullen, Melanie Morse and Amanda White. Josie Gould was one of the founders of the UNW and served as treasurer and regional vice-president before retiring. The scholarships have been handed out since 2002 and renamed after she died in 2008. - Terrence McEachern More power outages Northland Utilities reported both planned and unplanned power outage on the morning of Sept. 6. An unplanned power outage occurred in the Niven Lake subdivision in the morning hours affecting 510 customers. Power was restored at 8:05 a.m. Albert Bouchard, operations superintendent for Northland Utilities, said the cause of the outage is unknown at this time. The planned power outage was part of an eight-year project to convert parts of the City of Yellowknife from 5 kilovolts to 25 kilovolts. This is the sixth year of the project. The planned outage affected three buildings: the NorthwesTel building, the Precambrian Building and the Yellowknife Education District No. 1 building. - Terrence McEachern FASD Awareness Day Various events are being held throughout the city in conjunction with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day on Thursday. For the seventh year, the Yellowknife Association for Community Living is helping organize activities to mark the day. A walk will begin at the Centre for Northern Families at 9 a.m. to Holy Trinity Anglican Church and afterwards there will be a breakfast at Salvation Army. There will also be an information booth outside the post office from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. providing information on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. - Adrian Lysenko
