Brenden MacIntosh is scheduled to play at The Raven on April 27.

It might sound cheesy, but one of the songs on Brenden MacIntosh’s latest album ‘Pizza Time’ was actually meant for his wife at their wedding.

“It was really just for her, and then everyone heard it and the band was like, “why don’t we bring this to the band?’”

The song, ‘Jessica,’ is named after MacIntosh’s wife. It’s one of nine in his latest album that came out April 13, and there’s a chance he just might play it at the Raven on April 27.

So far, the feedback’s been pretty sweet.

“After all the work we put into it, it’s great to see people just listening to it and tell me how much they like it,” said MacIntosh. “We tried out some music videos this time around and one of them’s getting some pretty good attention so that’s really nice.”

The video in question is for the song ‘Jessica.’ With close to 1,000 views on YouTube, it’s become MacIntosh’s most popular video on his channel.

The success is nice but it’s not exactly the artist was banking on.

“You just write art that you would like to hear and then you just kind of hope that people would agree with you, I guess,” he laughed. “But playing live, we’ve had good reception to certain songs, and that helped me figure which songs we need to record.”

Playing live is something MacIntosh loves. He said it’s like a celebration that comes from time spent in the studio recording.

“I remember there’s one drum fill that I was stuck on for at least half an hour just doing over and over and over,” he said. “And I just threw my drum sticks.”

That bit of frustration was actually for another song MacIntosh has yet to release.

“I’ll keep that secret,” he chuckled.

When it comes to writing songs, its important to follow one’s intuition, according to MacIntosh. There needs to be a middle-ground between not overdoing it but also to be consistently playing.

“It’s this give and take. You’ve got to try to write, but wait until you get that golden nugget.”

Despite the release of a new album, MacIntosh’s work seems far from over. He’s planning a mini-tour in Alberta and has some shows he and his band can’t announce yet.

It also sounds like there’s another album on the way.

“Coffee Break and Pizza Time are part of a trilogy,” MacIntosh said of his past two albums. “I want to start getting that final part of it.”

And he has a larger goal in mind too.

“My dream would be to play at a festival where the crowd is so far you can’t even see the end,” he said. “That’s my dream.”
