Mounties intercept booze bound for Fort Liard

Three vehicles loaded with alcohol-bound for Fort Liard were intercepted by Mounties during a traffic blitz, say RCMP.

As part of National Safe Driving Week and Operation Gingerbread, the latter of which extends to New Year's Day, Mounties say they conducted traffic check stops earlier this week, resulting in charges and seizures.

A check stop netted 67 375 ml bottles of alcohol and seven 750 ml bottles of alcohol, along with 12 cans of beer, according to a news release issued by Mounties Monday.

Sixty-seven grams of marijuana was also seized by police, an amount that's over the legal limit for possession.

"Three males" and "three females," all from Fort Liard, were "implicated in the seizures and charges are pending under the Territorial Liquor Act," states the news release.

"Fort Liard is a restricted community and the quantity of liquor that a person may possess or bring over the border from B.C. is strictly limited by the Northwest Territories Liquor Act. “Seizures such as these assist the police in reducing the harm associated with substance abuse” states RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Condon in the news release.

"Fort Liard RCMP would like to remind the public that the actions of a few does not reflect the community as a whole. The police take these matters seriously. People who are willing to take the risk and violate the Liquor Restrictions should expect to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The restrictions are in place to protect the residents of the community," added York-Condon.

Mounties say the road blitz also led to impairment charges for a woman, who is not named in the news release.
