Violent week in Kivalliq

It was a violent week in at least two Kivalliq communities earlier this month.

In Rankin Inlet, a woman was brought to the local health centre with multiple non-life threatening stab wounds on Nov. 10.

She was treated and later released from the health centre. Members of the Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP arrested 39-year-old Victor Bruce in connection to the incident. As of press time, the nature of the charges had still not been released.

In Baker Lake, members of the Ottawa Police Service are investigating the death of a 23-year-old man who crashed his ATV while being chased by members of the local detachment of the RCMP on Nov. 11.

The Baker Lake officers had been notified on the afternoon of Nov. 11 that a man was driving possibly impaired in the community.

When the officers caught up to the man, he left his vehicle and fled away on a nearby ATV without a helmet.

He crashed the ATV while police were giving chase and succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the local health centre.

Nunavut's chief coroner and the Ottawa Police Service – contracted with the Government of Nunavut to conduct third-party investigations into cases where civilians die during or after interactions with police – are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

No further information was being released into the matter as of press time.
