A drop-in salsa dance class took place on Sunday afternoon at Quality Inn, drawing about 20 participants for an energetic and fun-filled session.

The donation-based event was made possible by instructor Denis Ranque, with support from the Multicultural Community of Yellowknife. Ranque expressed his gratitude to the organization for providing a space and snacks. He said he’s planning to start a group to make it possible for the salsa dance community to gather more frequently.

The class first took place a few weeks ago, with the next one scheduled for April 7. Among the participants was Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty. She said it presented an opportunity for her to try new things and meet new friends.

“I think it’s really important for our community because it brings us together, having laughs, meeting our neighbours. We really appreciate when folks put on events like this,” said Alty.

She also mentioned her interest in other dance classes supported by the Multicultural Association, including a K-pop dance class and belly dancing. Her hope for the salsa class is to improve her rhythm with each session.

As spring arrives in Yellowknife, the mayor encourages residents to enjoy the longer hours of sunlight and to participate in community events like the salsa class to relieve tension.

“Dance out the stress. That’s one of the things I love to do,” she said.
