Jackfish transformer creates city-wide outage

A city-wide power outage hit several Yellowknife businesses early Wednesday morning.

Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) said in a Facebook post that the power failure lasted from 4:05 a.m. to 4:45 a.m. and was due to a faulty transformer at the Jackfish Generating Station.

"It was a full community outage," said Doug Prendergast, manager of communications at NTPC. "They may well have had access to Internet, depending on their setup. But certainly electricity was unavailable."

Although the power outage was citywide, Prendergast said the NWT emergency alert would have been functional. The NWT Alert system is a GNWT service that helps reach the public with emergency messages through radio, television and cell phones.

"People's phones and text systems would still continue to exist, although they would not be able to charge their phones unless they had some kind of battery or another method of charging," he said. "But any emergency contact system would still work."
