NWT businesses can now apply for funding to help them pay back expenses related to personal protective equipment (PPE) that helped them reopen during the pandemic.

The NWT Chamber of Commerce is offering $58,000 worth of Reopening Safely Grants, with the help of sponsors Rio Tinto and the GNWT's Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment, the Chamber stated in a news release on Monday.

“One of the reasons why business in the NWT has not been as impacted as the south is their creativity and ingenuity to stay open and keep their employees and customers safe and healthy,” the Chamber said. “These changes required businesses to spend unavailable funds for PPE equipment to reopen, which became an unanticipated expense after months of little to no revenue.”

Companies can apply for grants that range from $500 to $1,000, with one application per business allowed.

NWT Chamber members can get 100 per cent of their PPE costs reimbursed and non-members can get 85 per cent reimbursed.

PPE expenses will be assessed based on receipts backdated to April 1, 2020.
