The swimming pool will be shutting down on Oct. 4 for an extended period of time for maintenance on the now 10-year-old facility.

The pool is expected to be closed for about four weeks while the work proceeds.

According to a report on the closure presented to town council on Sept. 25, there have been two full maintenance shutdowns in the last three years, which averaged approximately 20 days.

"This year, we are planning an extended shutdown of 28 days and a total expenditure of $53,000," the report stated.

Mayor Brad Mapes explained that this time of year has been chosen for the shutdown because it is a relatively slow period for the pool, noting the arena ice and walking track are available to people.

Unlike during this water safety activity in July, the town's swimming pool will close on Oct. 4 for about a 28-day period to allow for maintenance work. NNSL file photo.

"The work has to be done, or it would get worse and it would have to shut down for longer periods of time," Mapes said. "It just needed to be done."

The report to council noted that maintenance shutdowns are required for the long-term safe, reliable and cost-effective operation of the aquatic facility.

The maintenance activities require draining the pool and spa basins and result in suspension of all aquatic services to the public.

During this year's shutdown, the town is planning to undertake grouting and tile work in the shallow basins, as well as the steam room. Other planned maintenance work includes repairs to booster and caustic pumps, replacing valves, changing supply lines and adjusting or replacing various drains, grates and jets. General maintenance work will also be done on the slide.

The report to council noted there have been recent issues with the pool's automated chemical system, which have led to unsafe water conditions and temporary shutdowns. The vendor of the chemical system will be on site during the extended shutdown to inspect the system and make any required adjustments and will train pool staff on maintenance and operational procedures.
