NEWS BRIEFS: Woodland Manor addition to open

The new addition to the Woodland Manor long-term care facility will officially open at 1 p.m. on Oct. 5.

The addition replaces the 10 long-term care beds in the old H.H. Williams Memorial Hospital.

According to a Sept. 27 news release from the Department of Health and Social Services, the addition includes nine long-term care rooms and one family room. The family room is where relatives of residents can spend the night or have quiet family interactions.

The GNWT invested $7 million in the design and construction of the new addition.

ENR destroys nuisance bear

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) removed a nuisance bear from the Miron Drive area on Sept. 24.

"Unfortunately, the bear had become habituated to people and had to be removed and destroyed," stated a Sept. 24 news release from the department.

ENR thanked residents in the area for the bear-smarting efforts on their properties, noting the outcome would not have been as successful without the co-operation of the public.

A bear, believed to be the same animal, was seen around the Miron Drive area for several weeks.

Mayor Brad Mapes, who lives in the area, said it is not uncommon to see bears along the river.

But it was the first time that a bear appeared to claim the area, he said. "That bear would sit in the backyard like it owned the place."

Mapes was sorry to see the bear destroyed.

"It's sad, but you've got to look at the safety of your residents," said the mayor.
