Town council was updated on Aug. 15 about a week-long study by the Canadian Armed Forces in July on whether the town could support 420 persons for 72 hours in the event of an evacuation from a neighbouring town.
"The final report was very positive and we only showed a few weaknesses," noted Ross Potter, the town's director of protective services, in a written report on recent activities.
The study was done from July 8 to 14 by a five-member team as part of Operation Nunakput.
Potter noted the first weakness is a shortage of furniture and bedding, which could be resolved by obtaining those resources from the Arctic Winter Games when that event is done.
The second weakness is a lack of shower and laundry facilities, which could be resolved by renting trailer units.
The final weakness is food sources if an evacuation is prolonged and road access is compromised.
The study was done at the request of the GNWT.
