The current mayor of Hay River is going to be the next mayor of Hay River.
That's because Kandis Jameson was acclaimed to the post for a second consecutive election cycle as the deadline for registering as a candidate for municipal elections in the town came and went on Monday afternoon. Jameson was the only person to put her name forward to be the town's top politician, the same result as it was in 2021.
When it comes to candidates for town council, 11 people will be contesting the eight seats up for grabs. They include incumbents Robert Bouchard, Keith Dohey, Linda Duford, Jeff Groenewegen, Karen Wall and Brian Willows. Joining them on the campaign trail will be Kim Tybring, Wendy Dumas, Corrina Gagnier, Tom Lakusta and Rena Squirrel.
The Hay River District Education Authority has seven seats up for election, but as of Monday, only three people put their names forward as candidates: Pennie Pokiak, Annette Rupert and Jillian Zdebiak.
Because there aren't at least seven candidates, the registration deadline has been extended to Oct. 1. The registration package is available at the town's website.
The list of candidates is still unofficial as those on the list have until Wednesday at 3 p.m. to take their name out of the race.
