“The proposed 25 per cent tariff is a concern for all Canadians and likely Americans as it would have a significant economic implication," says NWT Premier R.J. Simpson.

Premier R.J. Simpson is speaking out about U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's proposed 25 per cent tariff on imported goods and how it might affect the Northwest Territories.

“The proposed 25 per cent tariff is a concern for all Canadians and likely Americans as it would have a significant economic implication," Simpson stated. "The Government of the Northwest Territories will play our role in a unified Team Canada approach to strengthen the relationship with the United States of America."

Trump said he will place a 25 per cent tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico if either country can't stop drugs and migrant crossings at U.S. borders.

Simpson added that he's confident that both countries can work together to address the issues being raised. He also noted that a meeting with all Canadian premiers that took place on Nov. 27 reinforced his confidence.

NNSL Media also asked Simpson if he is a supporter of Trump in general, but did not get an answer.

Mayor Rebecca Alty did not respond to a request for comment on how Trump's proposed 25 per cent tariff could impact Yellowknife.

Conservative candidate Kimberly Fairman declined to comment on the incoming U.S. president's economic policies and potential impact on the NWT.
