Three men from Edmonton are facing charges after a traffic stop in Inuvik late last month.
According to a release from police Tuesday morning, RCMP pulled a vehicle over on Jan. 25 after receiving tips from the public. The trio inside the vehicle included one man who was not supposed to be in the NWT under his bail conditions. The subsequent search of the vehicle turned up approximately 97 grams of cocaine along with around $3,320 in cash along with a machete, baton and other weapons.
As a result, Mohamad Hasan, 26, has been charged with trafficking cocaine, possession of the proceeds of crime and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Jamal Abdullah-Galgalo, 30, was charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and Gasser Mahmoud, 30, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and seven counts of failing to comply with bail conditions including that he not be in the Northwest Territories.
All three were remanded in custody pending future court dates.
“This incident highlights the important role that the public plays in reporting suspicious drug activity within their community," stated Staff Sgt. Jesse Aubin, detachment commander of Inuvik RCMP. "Residents are asked to contact the RCMP if they suspect that drug trafficking activities are taking place.”
