A Fort Good Hope man is facing several charges after a police chase through Yellowknife.
RCMP say they attempted to stop a vehicle in the city's downtown on Nov. 9 for a document check. The motorist immediately drove away and police opted not to pursue for public safety reasons. The RCMP later located the suspect vehicle at the Chateau Nova parking lot, but when police attempted to stop it, the vehicle began to circle the parking lot, ignoring calls to pull over.
"Given the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the situation, responding officers requested all hotel guests shelter inside the building until the incident concluded," said NT RCMP media relation officer Const. Josh Seaward.
Police say the suspect vehicle then drove from the parking lot onto a nearby walking trail. Eventually, the driver fled the vehicle and continued on foot, breaking into a nearby home.
"Officers pursued the suspect into the residence and arrested him," said Seaward. "The occupants of the residence took shelter from the subject and were not injured."
Daniel Lennie, 40, of Fort Good Hope is charged with flight from police; operation of a vehicle while prohibited; breaking, entering and committing an indictable offence; resisting a peace officer; and failure to comply with release order conditions. He has appeared before a justice of the peace and remains in custody.
"At the time of his arrest, Lennie was subject to house arrest conditions, having been previously released on bail," said Seaward. "He was also subject to a driving prohibition.
"Anyone with information on this matter is asked to contact the Yellowknife RCMP at 669-1111 or Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com. In the event of an emergency call, 911."
