A Hay River man is in custody after what police say was an intentional hit and run.

Police say they received a complaint that a person had been struck by a vehicle on Woodland Drive on July 8 and the vehicle left the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police located the suspected driver of the vehicle — whose name has not been released — and took him into custody without incident. Upon further investigation, officers concluded that the accused and victim knew each other and had engaged in an altercation prior to the single vehicle collision.

"There is not believed to be a risk to the general public," said NT RCMP media relations officer Const. Josh Seaward. "An update will be provided when further information is available.

"Investigation into this matter remains ongoing. Police are asking anyone who may have video footage, photos or information about this incident to contact the Hay River RCMP at 874-1111 or Crime Stoppers at In the event of an emergency call, 911."
