KBL Environmental in Yellowknife avoids structural damage in Monday night fire

The Yellowknife Fire Division responded to a fire at KBL Environmental Ltd. on Cameron Road in the Kam Lake industrial area on Monday night.

There was no damage to the building and no injuries were reported, said Jeff Dirks, president and CEO of the company.

The fire started in the yard outside the structure, where non-regulated materials were temporarily stored.

“In conjunction with the required authorities, KBL will be conducting a thorough assessment of potential impacts and rectifying all findings. Additional information will become available over the coming days,” said Dirks.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Michael David, a resident who lives across the street, noticed the fire around 10:48 p.m.

He immediately called 911 and was told that emergency responders were already on their way to the scene. He said a fire truck arrived less than a minute later.

David and his wife watched the fire burn for another half hour from outside their house, he said. When they went back inside, the whole yard was still engulfed in flames.

David expressed concern but also sympathy for KBL.

“It’s an industrial area, fires happen. I don’t know what caused it, but I definitely feel bad for them,” he said.

In a press release late Tuesday evening, the city stated that crews arrived on scene at around 10:45 p.m. and stayed until 1:45 a.m. No injuries were reported and the case has been handed over to the Office of the Fire Marshal to investigate the cause.
