Wildland firefighters from the NWT trying to suppress a significant blaze burning near the border with Alberta have less equipment to work with after a couple of fire pumps were stolen recently.

NWT Fire circulated word of the crime in its daily public update on Tuesday.

"These pumps are essential tools in protecting the cabins and other items that people in the area care about and it is disheartening to see," the government agency stated.

Anyone with information that could lead to the recovery of the fire pumps is asked to report it by calling (867) 872-0541.

In regards to the wildfire itself, NWT Fire reported that "work to address areas of longer-term potential for growth to the west of Highway 1 continues."
