Public hearing on name change

A public hearing on a proposed name change to Ruyant Crescent is scheduled for May 14 at Inuvik Town Council chambers. The proposed new name for the road is Jak Zheii Place, which translates to ‘blueberry place’ in Gwich’in.

“This change is being presented on behalf of the Naming Committee who have chosen it to honour the Town of Inuvik’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, while also acknowledging a cherished location for berry picking among locals and elders in years past,” said the town on its social media feed.

Support or opposition to the change may be voiced in person at the hearing or submitted in writing until 7 p.m. May 14. Written submissions can be emailed to Jenna.MacNeil@inuvik.ca, mailed to PO box 1160, Inuvik, NT, or dropped off to the town office.

Science Rendezvous coming to town

No more scavenging at the dump as of May 13

Town officials are cautioning the Inuvik solid waste site will close to scavenging on May 13 out of concern for bears coming out of hibernation.

“An early spring has caused an increased presence of bears and other wildlife,” read the notice. “If you will be scavenging prior to the closing date please use the appropriate precautions, always be alert, avoid bear feeding areas such as residential garbage and respect all instructions given by solid waste site staff. Thank you for your cooperation.”
