Tununiq MLA Karen Nutarak, who joined cabinet earlier this month, will serve as minister of Justice, will be responsible for Nunavut Arctic College, Labour and the Human Rights Tribunal.

The shuffling of cabinet portfolios was announced late Thursday afternoon.

Other changes will see Environment Minister Daniel Qavvik also oversee the Department of Culture and Heritage.

Economic Development and Transportation Minister David Akeeagok adds Human Resources to his portfolios.

Premier P.J. Akeeagok takes on responsibility for Seniors in addition to his existing roles as minister of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs and minister responsible for the Utility Rates Review Council.

“I want to welcome Minister Karen Nutarak to the cabinet, whose energy and enthusiasm has already positively impacted our team,” the premier stated. “We are at a critical point in our mandate, with less than two years to accomplish our ambitious goals. I want to ensure that our collective energy as a cabinet is focused on our mandate priorities and the work that remains to be done.”

The changes in cabinet became necessary when Amittuq MLA Joelie Kaernerk resigned in January after having his portfolios stripped. He was suspended from the legislative assembly for a code of conduct violation and then was suspended a second time in early March.
