Members of the Philippine Cultural Association of Yellowknife (PCAY) gathered by the shores of Frame Lake to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities this July 1.

The Light up the Lake event took place at 9 p.m. by the Drum Dance sculpture at Somba K’e Park to demonstrate support to residential school survivors and their families in lieu of annual Canada Day celebrations.

Lea Barbosa-Leclerc, PCAY president, called the ceremony intimate with about 65 people, including Elder Paul Andrew and William Greenland, coming out to light a candle in commemoration of those who never returned home.
