Power was knocked out in parts of Paulatuk for over two days after a vehicle knocked down a power line.

NWT Power Corporation communications manager Doug Prendergast said that approximately 89 customers were left without electricity after a vehicle struck a power line on April 24.

He added NTPC was unaware of any injuries reported in the collision.

“As a result of the collision, power lines and a transformer ended up on the ground and the pole was broken,” he said. “In order to restore power, the pole had to be replaced and the transformer and power line restored. This required a line crew to be flown to the community to make the necessary repairs.

“The crew arrived in Paulatuk at approximately 7:45 p.m. and was able to restore power by 11:26 p.m., although it was only a temporary fix,” he continued. “Further work is being completed today to install a replacement power pole and related infrastructure. A planned outage is currently underway to re-establish a stable system. A new pole was installed earlier this afternoon and now the supporting infrastructure is being installed. Power will be restored as soon as that work is completed. Throughout the outage, NTPC has been in regular contact with community leadership. The school was opened last night to provide a warming centre for those who required it.”

Repairs were completed shortly after 6 p.m. April 25 and power has been restored to the community.
