Well that didn’t take long — amid a growing Covid-19 outbreak in the Yukon, the Chief Public Health Officer has issued an advisory to anyone planning to make the trip from the Beaufort Delta to Whitehorse. It’s barely been a week since the GNWT announced it was lifting travel restrictions on travel between the Beaufort Delta and the Yukon and already the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer is issuing a travel advisory for anyone going towards Whitehorse.

Noting the Yukon has seen an increase in Covid-19 cases over the last week, the June 10 notice advises anyone travelling to the Yukon to “review the Yukon government’s COVID-19 information website to make informed choices about travelling to the territory.”

“The COVID-19 situation in the Yukon has changed significantly in the last week,” said Dr. Kami Kandola in the release. “There are currently six confirmed and two probable COVID-19 cases and the Yukon government says that three people are hospitalized. A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Yukon’s Eagle Gold Mine.”

No changes are currently being proposed to the new exemption process at this time. It notes each exemption request is reviewed individually and travel plans that are considered high risk may result in recommendations to self-isolate on return. It adds that if the Covid-19 outbreaks in the Yukon continue to escalate, the CPHO may consider requiring testing for people returning from the Yukon.

Travellers are also asked to visit the Yukon government’s Public Exposure Notification website to ensure their destination is safe.
