Facts of Rankin sex assault released ahead of sentencing

Rankin Inlet

A territorial justice has released the facts that will form the basis for his sentencing of a Rankin Inlet Man who was found guilty of sexual assault earlier this summer.

On May 30, Lee Jordan Nauya was convicted for sexually assaulting a woman in September 2014.

The woman's name is protected by a publication ban. According to the facts of the case which were made public on July 16, Nauya and another man forced her to drink alcohol after running into them in town.

The woman testified that her hands were held behind her back by one of the men while Nauya poured liquor down her throat.

After the assault was committed Nauya left the woman on the side of the road. She later ended up in a black out state in a Winnipeg hospital.

In his assessment of the facts, Justice Earl Johnson said he did not believe Nauya had a premeditated plan and that he would not consider his post-offence conduct in the sentencing.

Johnson is expected to deliver his sentence Iqaluit on August 20.
