Minor hockey players registered with the Rankin Inlet Minor Hockey Association were fortunate enough to participate in their second high-quality player-development camp of the 2018-19 hockey season when the instructors for the Winnipeg-based The Rink Player Development brought their skill-development expertise to the community this past weekend.
The Rink features three high-level development directors in director of player development John Cara, director of female player development Addie Miles-Abbott and Mike Hellyer, director of TESTify Performance.
Hannah Siksik of the Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP took the lead in organizing the camp for the young players in Rankin.
Logo contest
Kivalliq
The Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) is holding a logo-design contest open to all Inuit beneficiaries under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
The winning entry will be the official logo of the Kivalliq Community Culture Initiatives Program Funding and its designer will win a brand-new iPad.
The contest theme is Inuit Cultural and Traditional. The deadline for contest submissions is Dec. 14.
Submissions must include an official entry form from the contest entrant's local CLO, or they can request one from the Social Development Program at KIA.
Grad fundraisers
Rankin Inlet
A 2019 grad craft sale will be held at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik this coming Saturday, Dec. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m.
The students are fundraising for their grad and, although the event was announced on short notice, they will have 40 tables available at $20 per table for the combined craft-and-bake sale.
There will also be canteen services available. The students will be selling taco-in-a-bag, pop, chips, kukuk, coffee and tea.
The Rankin grads will also be hosting an '80s teen dance on Dec. 15 at the community hall from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.
The cost to attend the dance is $5 for those dressed in '80s style and $10 for those who are not.
The dance is restricted to those aged 16 years and older and there will be prizes awarded to those who are the best dressed in the styles of the decade.
Breakfast with Santa
Baker Lake
The Baker Lake Youth Athletic Association (BLYAA) will be holding Breakfast with Santa at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School on Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
A child's plate (two sausages, scrambled eggs and one pancake) is priced at $6 for the event, while an adult plate (three sausages, scrambled eggs and three pancakes) will be available for $12. Proceeds from Breakfast with Santa will go the BLYAA.
Science projects
Rankin Inlet
Folks in Rankin Inlet are reminded that they may drop-in to the gymnasium at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) to view the projects entered into this year's MUI Science Fair on Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.
The students who have the top projects at this year's MUI Science Fair will advance to the regional Kivalliq Science Fair in the new year for a chance to compete at the national Canada-wide Science Fair in Fredericton, N.B., from May 11 to 18, 2019.
