Folks in Rankin Inlet had to run their water for awhile until it cleared this past week when local firemen accidentally got sediment into the water system while conducting an exercise.

Hockey volunteer awarded

Arviat

Gleason Uppahuak returned home from Winnipeg to accept his Commissioner’s Award for all his years volunteering for various hockey programs.

The award was presented by Nunavut Commissioner Nellie Kusugak in Arviat on May 22.

Uppahuak has organized the Calm Air Cup (Jon Lindell Memorial) senior men's tourney and been involved with Arviat minor hockey for a number of years.

He now also co-ordinates the regional Kivalliq Jr. Canucks program with David Clark of Rankin Inlet.

The annual Rankin Inlet Cod Fishing Derby was held in Rankin this past weekend from May 25 to 27.

Top prizes in this year's derby are $10,000, $7,000, $5,000, $4,000, $3,000, $2,000, $1,00 and $500.

The top prize winners had not been determined by press time.
