Cam Bay sealift will be late, ice breaker en route

Extensive ice in the Queen Maud Gulf  has left a Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. (NSSI) cargo ship anchored at the east end of the Bellot Strait for a few days this week.

Sealift will be three or four days behind schedule in Cambridge Bay due to ice, according to the general manager of Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. photo courtesy of Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc.

The Coast Guard heavy icebreaker Louis Saint Laurent, delayed by search and rescue operations, is en route to bust through the ice.

The cargo for Cambridge Bay was due to arrive on Sept. 5 but it will be three to four days behind schedule due to these factors, said Waguih Rayes, general manager of NSSI's parent company.

Cambridge Bay residents may spot NSSI's cargo ship in the harbour this weekend. However, it will only be a quick break for a crew change and then the vessel departs for TMAC's Hope Bay gold mine for a three-day delivery. Then, Rayes noted, the ship is scheduled to turn around, return to Cambridge Bay and offload community cargo, which will only be accessible after TMAC's freight is moved out of the way.
