Caribou management meeting this week

A public meeting regarding the Dolphin and Union caribou herd management plan is scheduled for the evening of Feb. 22 at the community hall.

Lisa-Marie Leclerc, regional wildlife biologist with the Department of Environment, will provide an overview of the document's contents.

All community members who are concerned about the status of the caribou herd, which has been in decline according to scientific studies, are encouraged to attend the meeting, said Beverly Maksagak, manager of the Ekaluktutiak Hunters and Trappers Organization.

In a separate development through the HTO, residents who want a chance at a polar bear tag for Hadley Bay or M'Clintock Bay must submit their names to the HTO office by noon on Feb. 21. There are four tags available for M'Clintock Bay and three for Hadley Bay.

The tags for the first seven names drawn will be in effect until March 5. If the hunts are unsuccessful by that time, more names will be drawn for the remaining tags.
