On Sept. 6, close to 20 elders came to the arena to play bocce on the turf. The game is similar to lawn bowling, except the ball is rolled at other balls instead of pins.

Maktaaq and tea were offered to participants and they were able to play darts as well. As the two-hour morning session drew to a close, some of the elders were having such a good time they were reluctant to leave, said recreation coordinator Ghadihela Quezada.

"Every Thursday we're going to try to get the elders together for something different, something new they could try out," Quezada said. "We did (bocce) to let them see that the arena is not just for the young people. The elders can enjoy the arena too."

Also on the agenda is teaching the seniors how to use the internet, Quezada noted, adding that the Qikiqtani Inuit Association has donated some computers.

"We're just thinking of giving them the opportunity and letting them know that there are these programs," she said.
