Elders received flowers on Women's Day while attending a meeting at CHARS with Polar Knowledge Canada in Cambridge Bay March 8. At back is Kakolak Avadluk. At front are Margaret Okhina, Annie Atighioyak, Mary Kaotalok, Mabel Etegik and Bessie Omilgoitok.

Welcome to the sunny side of Victoria Island in the busy community of Cambridge Bay. It is exciting to have longer daylight hours and warmer weather with more residents going out on the land and out ice fishing and hunting.

The Omingmak Racing Committee is busy holding meetings to plan for the upcoming 2018 Omingmak Frolics races scheduled for April 30 to May 6. The executive committee members are Ellie Mala, Kelsey Maniyogina, Tammy Omilgoetok, Tracy Okhina, Amos Fletcher and Catherine Anayoak. Their next meeting is scheduled for March 14. This year the annual spring festival is scheduled earlier than other years due to ice safety and early melting down on the ice. The 2018 Omingmak Frolics are scheduled for May 3 to 6.

The Cambridge Bay Minor Hockey Association is operating at full force for the youth of the community of Cambridge Bay. Without having the ice arena to play hockey this year and for the next while, the coaches and volunteers and parents overcame their obstacles and this is worth celebrating. Koana to the coaches, volunteers and parents who make sure our youth will have a healthy activity to look forward to and for doing whatever they needed to do to help our youth in our community. Hats off to each of you. Have fun kids.

The minor hockey participants have floor hockey three times a week at both the Kullik Ilihakvik and Kiilnik High school gymnasiums as the recreation schedule is full with many sports activities. The minor hockey association continues to take registrations for anyone ages 3-16. You can register with Derek Marshall at Northern Stores. Registration is $40, but you can't afford the registration fee, the association will still register your child and the fee will be taken care of. We welcome all kids both girls and boys. Hockey sticks are available at the gyms already. Make sure to bring your running shoes. Have fun and be safe kids.

Enjoy spring, as it is coming very fast. Maybe we will have an early spring, which puts a big smile on the residents of Cambridge Bay.

International Women's Day was celebrated around the community on March 8 with tea and snacks at the Elders Palace sponsored by the Wellness Centre. A luncheon and meeting were held at CHARS site for our elders to speak with Polar Knowledge staff to help plan the future with their knowledge and involvement with the research and science centre, which will be officially opened very soon. The building is amazing with lots of Inuit culture and art. So beautiful. We are all proud of this centre. Good luck to everyone who will help shape this important facility for all of us as science, Inuit knowledge and traditions combine together to make history. Koana to all our elders for their knowledge and strength and respect. We look forward for our youth who will lead in this important facility. Koana Inuuja for making sure this happens.

God be with you Son.
