Frank Elanik Jr., an Aklavik man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2015 beating death of his longtime wife May Elanik, has been sentenced to six years.

Elanik, who was initially charged with second-degree murder, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in July after reaching a plea deal with Crown prosecutors. Elanik was sentenced in Aklavik shortly after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

May Elanik was found seriously injured and unconscious on a snowmobile trail in Aklavik on Nov. 11, 2015.

She was transported to an Edmonton hospital where she died a week later.

Elanik wasn't charged with her murder until May 2016.

Frank Jr. had been married to May for more than 20 years and the two had several children together.

With credit for time already spent in custody, Elanik has 28 months, or two years and four months, left to serve in custody. Elanik must submit a sample of his DNA and is banned from possessing firearms for 10 years.
