AROUND THE NORTH: Photo workshop after dark in Fort Simpson

The wonders of the Northern night sky will be captured through the lenses of participants of the upcoming Nighttime Photography Workshop.Hosted by Fort Simpson's Open Sky Creative Society, and under the guidance of photographer Todd Noseworthy, participants will learn to take photos of the Northern lights and the milky way, plus night scenes in general.

The workshop spans multiple sessions, some during the day, on March 23 and March 24, plus a weekend slot, with a yet-to-be-determined date and time.

Participants are required to have "a digital camera with manual settings, a stable tripod and warm outdoor clothes," states a bulletin about the workshop.

Fusion restaurant to open next month

Inuvik's culinary scene is about to get a bit more spicy.

Inuvik's first Jamaican-Pakistani-Indian fusion restaurant, JamPaks, will have its grand opening at the Cafe on Mackenzie Saturday, April 14.

JamPaks spokesperson Chris Sharpe said the restaurant will aim to fill a gap in Inuvik's culinary scene.

"These are some of the foods that are missing and we want to bring a little more flavour into the community," Sharpe said.

"We're bringing to Inuvik Caribbean food, Jamaican food, Indian food and Pakistani food and fusion combinations of all of our foods."

The restaurant will be open every Saturday for lunch from noon to 3 p.m. and for dinner from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Cafe on Mackenzie beside Moe's Convenience Store.

Sharpe said there will also be a seating area where customers can enjoy their food.

Menu items range from $2 to $25 and include snacks and full meals.

Butter chicken poutine, lamb kebabs, samosas and Jamaican patties will all be served up at the new weekly cafe.

AWG exhibition to be launched

An exhibition on the Arctic Winter Games (AWG) will be launched at 7 p.m. on March 15 at Fort Smith's Northern Life Museum & Cultural Centre.

It will provide a glimpse into the different cultures of the circumpolar world, a collection of AWG pins, stories from athletes from previous games, photographs and memorabilia.

The games will be held from March 18 to March 24 in Fort Smith and Hay River.

The exhibition is being held in a partnership between the museum and the 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games Host Society.

A festival to beat the winter blues

Cabin Fever Days is fast approaching in Fort Liard.

Set for March 23 and 24, the festival has a slew of activities planned including community feasts, a pancake breakfast, adult games and a drum dance.

Indigenous entertainment group Magoo Crew is set to entertain audiences on both Friday and Saturday nights.

The talent show, set for Friday night, will give out prizes in a variety of categories. First prize for solo adult will be a wood splitter, first prize for adults in the duet category is one cord of wood each.

First prize in the youth category is a kicksled. Prizes for second and third place will also be awarded.

A family snow-sculpting contest involves participants building a sculpture in their yard, which will be judged the Saturday afternoon. The prize for that event is a chainsaw and one cord of wood.

Order of the NWT accepting nominations

Beaufort Delta

Nominations are now being accepted for the territory's highest honour, the Order of the Northwest Territories.

Those who have demonstrated a high level of individual excellence and achievement and have made a significant contribution to the territory and its people are eligible for the award.

In 2017, Fred Carmichael of Inuvik was one of the recipients of the award.

Nomination forms can be filled out at www.assembly.gov.nt.ca.

Nominations will be accepted until Monday, April 30.

Bison Jamboree coming up

Plans are cementing for this year's Deh Cho Bison Jamboree in Fort Providence.

The carnival will run March 21 to March 25.

A meeting at the community hall was set for March 8 to discuss plans, including a need for volunteers.

In past years, the popular multi-day community carnival has included a talent show, community barbecue, plus tournaments, games, snow drag races and much more.

The event aims to draw in people from the Deh Cho and usually succeeds with visitors from Hay River and other nearby communities.

Spring carnival in Fort Resolution

The Hamlet of Fort Resolution Spring Carnival will take place from March 28 to April 1.

The annual carnival will feature Northern games for adults and children, a talent show, dog sled races, the crowning of a carnival king, queen, prince and princess and more.

Leaders to be trained in healthy child development

A free training course for people who work for children is coming up in Fort Simpson March 22.

Principles of Healthy Child Development – or PHCD – aims to help front-line leaders, or anybody who works with children aged 6 to 12, enhance their programming.

"Leaders have a major impact on a child's positive experience. The training is based in research and has been designed to equip leaders with activities, knowledge, tips and resources addressing key topics," states a bulletin advertising the program.

Those topics include bullying, conflict resolution, physical literacy, children's mental health and moderate to vigorous physical activity.

The program runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and participants are asked to register for the program, which is delivered by NWT Recreation and Parks Association.

Record Arctic salmon harvest in 2017

According to a report released by Arctic Salmon Project, record numbers of salmon were harvested in almost all communities in 2017.

More than 450 Arctic salmon were traded in to the Arctic Salmon Project last year and according to the report, Chum salmon are most abundant. Other species of salmon were also harvested.

The project is a community-based monitoring program in the Northwest Territories and western Nunavut.

Hitting the slope

A weekend snowboard clinic was set to take place March 9 to11 in Fort Liard.

Coaches from the NWT Snowboard Association were expected to be on hand for the clinic, which was set to include not only instruction but inspirational videos, a dinner, lunch and snacks, and a mini competition set for the Sunday.

The snowboarding aspect of the weekend was to take place at Hay Lake Hill outside the community.

The snowboard association helps "communities to form clubs, develop programs, host events and create facilities to bring snowboarding to as wide an audience as we can," according to the organization's website.

Artisan market planned for Spring Fling

Plans are in the works for a craft and bake sale in Norman Wells during the Spring Fling festival weekend, pending interested vendors.

Tentatively scheduled for April 14, the Spring Fling Craft and Bake Thing will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the community hall.

"Vendors, we need you to make this happen," states a bulletin advertising the program.

"Artists, bakers, jewellery makers, knitters, sewers, cooks and growers" are among those invited to participate.

The cost to vendors will be $10 a table, with proceeds going toward the fall farmer's market.
