AROUND THE NORTH: Union meeting at Nahanni Inn

Members of the Union of Northern Workers Local 13 will gather in Fort Simpson Oct. 16.

The meeting, set to take place at the Nahanni Inn, is the organization’s annual general meeting and full executive election.

Things kick off at 5:30 p.m.

Attendees will have a chance to win a iPad mini in a draw, plus play bingo, stated a bulletin advertising the meeting on social media.

The Union of Northern Workers is made up of 23 locals, broken up by community, department, or bargaining unit.

Local 13 represents all GNWT employees in Fort Simpson, Fort Liard, Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Wrigley and Trout Lake.

It also includes employees at Fort Simpson Housing, Village of Fort Simpson, Fort Simpson Marine Workers and school board employees.

Caregivers learn to de-stress

A program aimed at family wellness is inviting community members in Fort Simpson to take part.

“Walk ... Talk ... Breathe and Stretch” takes off Thursdays from Sanaeah Prenatal at 1:30 p.m.

But it’s not just for pregnant mothers.

“Dads, aunties, uncles, grandma and grandpa and other caregivers of babies to 5-year-olds” are all welcome, stated a bulletin advertising the ongoing event.

“Join us for a walk to the rec centre where we’ll do a fun walking circuit, de-stress with breathing exercises and s-t-r-e-t-c-h,” states the bulletin.

Child-minding will be provided, it stated.

Register now for popular bazaar

Liidlii Kue/Fort Simpson

A popular annual event in Fort Simpson is now accepting registrations.

The John Tsetso Memorial Library’s Annual Christmas Bazaar is scheduled for Nov. 17.

“Book early to get the table location you want!” stated a bulletin advertising registrations.

Each year, community members shuffle to the school and peruse wares and goodies from local vendors.

The event will be held at Thomas Simpson Secondary School gymnasium and is open for the public to browse and buy between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

To book a spot, community members are asked to call the library between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The cost is $20 a table.

The day of, vendors will have an hour to set up.

Health and wellness celebrated

Acho Dene Koe/Fort Liard

A recent healthy-living fair in Fort Liard promised fun and prizes.

The Fort Liard Community Healthy Living Fair was scheduled to take place on Oct. 3 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Co-organized by Acho Dene Koe First Nation and the Government of the Northwest Territories, the fair was aimed at healthy living.

“A stronger healthier us!” stated a bulletin on social media.

At the fair, healthy soup and bannock was advertised as being available between 11:30 and 2:30 p.m.

There were many prizes on hand to be won.

Those included a Coleman cooler, walking poles, camp dishes and cutlery, helmets, fishnet, lifejackets, snares, a sleeping bag, tarps, a Fort McPherson Canvas tent and more, according to the bulletin.

New superintendent for education authority

The Deh Cho Divisional Education Council has a new superintendent as of this school year.

Philippe Brulot has a long history in the North, most recently serving as principal of Chief Albert Wright School in Tulita.

Previously, he served as superintendent/CEO of Yellowknife-based Commission Scholaire Francophone.

“Mr. Brulot has come to be widely known for his strong leadership skills anchored in deep values of integrity, transparency and accountability,” states a document from the DDEC welcoming Brulot.

In a recent statement by Brulot, published by MLA Shane Thompson, Brulot stated: “Our students are bright and capable and we owe it to them to build the best district that we can.”

Community invited for Thanksgiving feast

Deline/Fort Franklin

Community members in Deline were in for a Thanksgiving treat on Oct. 7.

Deline Got’ine Government hosted an afternoon turkey lunch at the cultural centre.

“Come and have a homemade thanksgiving meal on us,” stated a bulletin advertising the event on social media.

The lunch was scheduled to take place after church on Thanksgiving Sunday.

According to chatter on the Deline social media forum, the event was a success.

“Thank you all ...  a very successful Thanksgiving lunch,” stated one person.

“Thank you to DDG for an awesome meal. Hats off to all the staff,” stated another.
