AROUND THE SOUTH SLAVE: Fort Smith to mark 50th anniversary of landslide

A meeting will be held on May 28 to plan how Fort Smith will commemorate the 50th anniversary of a major landslide on Aug. 9, 1968.

The commemoration planning is being led by three residents of the community.

The event would include setting up a memorial plaque in the area of the landslide and a community feast.

The organizers are also welcoming other ideas from community residents.

The May 28 meeting is set for 7 p.m. at Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park.

The landslide in 1968 killed one person and caused extensive property damage.

Band to hold yard beautification contest

Smith's Landing First Nation is holding a yard beautification competition for reserve residents.

The First Nation has reserve land in northern Alberta, just south of Fort Smith.

Participants must register by June 8.

The competition will award cash prizes – $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place.

The winners of the competition will be announced on Aug. 31.

First Nation seeks award nominations

Deninu Ku'e/Fort Resolution

Deninu Ku'e First Nation in Fort Resolution is accepting nominations for the youth and elder awards for the 26th annual general assembly of the Akaitcho Territory Government to be held from June 25 to June 29 in Yellowknife.

The youth award is for a Treaty 8 member between the ages of 13 and 30 years. The award will be for promoting culture and heritage, volunteering, and/or academic, athletic or personal achievement.

The elder award is for a Treaty 8 member over the age of 55 years.

The closing date for nominations is May 25.
