AROUND THE SOUTH SLAVE: Physician shortage in Fort Smith to temporarily close medical clinic

Due to a shortage of physicians, the medical clinic in Fort Smith will be closed from Aug. 13 to Aug. 31.

That announcement was made late last week by the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority.

"Please bear with us during this time as we continue to meet the needs of the community during this physician shortage," reads a public notice from the authority. "Thank you for your patience."

Nursing services, the specialist clinic, Telehealth and the emergency department will remain open at the Fort Smith Health and Social Services Centre during the closure of the medical clinic.

Public hearing set on GNWT bill

The Legislative Assembly's Standing Committee on Government Operations will hold a public review in Enterprise of Bill 8: The Emergency Management Act.

The review will begin at 6 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Community Centre.

Registration open for Dark Sky Festival

The registration deadline is Aug. 15 for the annual Thebacha & Wood Buffalo Dark Sky Festival in Fort Smith and area.

According to a notice from the Thebacha and Wood Buffalo Astronomical Society, people need to register to take part in activities at the seventh-annual festival, set for Aug. 23 to Aug. 26.

Guest presenters include Dr. Roberta Bondar, who was Canada's first female astronaut.

Other guests will be Nicole Mortillaro, a senior science reporter with CBC, and Roland Dechesne, a light abatement specialist.
Featured activities include a Circus of Science, information on rocket building, and other workshops and seminars.

The festival takes place in Fort Smith and at Pine Lake in the northern Alberta section of Wood Buffalo National Park.
