Businesses across country targeted in email bomb threats, warn RCMP

NWT RCMP are warning residents not to respond to emails demanding bitcoin payment after threats were made to several businesses across Canada.

In a news release issued by on Friday, Mounties say bomb threats were made to "multiple community businesses" across the country. The emails demanded bitcoin, an electronic currency, according to RCMP.

Yellowknife RCMP received one report of the threatening emails on Dec. 13.

Mounties in the territory are investigating the "origin and validity" of the threats.

"If you have been the recipient of one of these e-mail threats, please do not respond to the bit coin demand. Please report it to your local RCMP detachment," states the news release.

The investigation is ongoing.
