Details scarce as police continue to investigate recent sudden deaths

With investigations into a number of sudden deaths in NWT communities still open, details about each case remain scarce.

NWT RCMP are currently investigating five sudden deaths that have occurred throughout the territory in recent months, Cpl. Robert Frizzell confirmed to News/North.

Active probes include the death of a woman in Fort Smith, whose body was discovered in the morning of Dec. 31, 2017, and the sudden death of a woman in her 20s in Lutsel K'e.

A pair of sudden deaths last month, including the death of a 38-year-old woman in Inuvik and the discovery of a 38-year-old man's body in Deline on April 2, are also still under police investigation.

Most recently, police responded to the sudden death of an individual in Norman Wells on May 1. RCMP haven't released the gender of that deceased person.

"All of these investigations are still under investigation at different stages and we have no further information we can provide at this time, stated Frizzell in an email.

"Once we have a clearer picture of the outcomes of these investigations, a media update will be provided by either us or the Coroner's Office depending on which way they go."

The NWT Coroner's Office investigates any time a death in the territory occurs.

As News/North reported last week, the April death of a 40-year-old man in Aklavik has been deemed suspicious in nature. Police are continuing to investigate.
