Explosives team flown to Fort Smith after blasting caps found

RCMP

A moving day for one Fort Smith homeowner ended with a bang.

On Aug. 19, Fort Smith RCMP were called to a residence after a homeowner, who was packing belongings ahead of a move, discovered a small quantity of blasting caps in their home, stated an RCMP news release Thursday.

Blasting caps are commonly used as explosives for mining and road construction.

An explosives disposal team from Edmonton was called in to the community. The explosive devices were removed from the home and taken to a firearms range in Fort Smith where they were detonated.

No one was injured and Mounties say there is no concern for public safety.

"The RCMP would like to reiterate that the complainant acted appropriately in contacting the detachment when the blasting caps were discovered," stated the news release.

"These types of devices are not uncommon in the North where there is a fair bit of mining and construction activity and would encourage anyone who happens upon them to respond in the same manner and contact your local detachment."
