External probe into Richard Binder Jr.'s death continues

BINDER-2

Investigators with the Edmonton Police Service are continuing to probe the disappearance and death of 35-year-old Richard Binder Jr.

Binder's body was located near Big Lake in the Inuvik area on Nov. 3. The discovery of his body came after Inuvik RCMP asked for the public's help in locating Binder on Oct. 29.

Binder was wanted on outstanding warrants for charges including assault causing bodily harm, resisting a police officer and failing to comply with a recognizance.

Mounties say Binder was informed he was under arrest on Oct. 25, but that he fled from police.

Due to RCMP having contact, albeit brief, with Binder, the contact still constituted an “in custody event.”

When someone in police custody dies, an external investigation is ordered. Edmonton Police Service was tasked with leading the investigation, with investigators traveling to Inuvik in November.

“EPS investigators have completed their local work in Inuvik,” stated Edmonton Police Services spokesperson Cheryl Voordenhout in an email to New/North.

“However, the investigation remains active, as investigators compile their report and await the medical examiner’s report and toxicology results.”

Voordenhout said investigators expect the probe to take several more months.
