An Alberta-based school food program will be offered in Behchoko next year.

The program is being offered by charity organization, APPLE Schools and is designed to give children full-stomachs and clear minds while in the classroom.

Director of education Shannon Barnett-Aikman could not be reached for comment about the program by press time.

Jimmy Bruneau high school wrote a proposal to Apple Schools regarding an increase in funding toward their current food services, said principal Patti Turner.

Turner said she could not comment on the program further until given permission by Barnett-Aikman.

The group said they are pleased with the work already being done to help students in the region. Apple Schools' sustainability manager Marg Schwartz and school health mentor Landra Walker were in Behchoko on April 5 to welcome Chief Jimmy Bruneau school to the program.

“Already, they are making healthy snack available for everyone! A promising beginning,” stated a Twitter post from Apple Schools on April 5.

The Apple Schools food service will add to Behchoko's promise of making sure students never go hungry said Elizabeth Mackenzie Elementary School principal, John Gouthro.

“We have our own food program at the school and have continuously run it for the past number of years. It's one of the best things we offer our students,” said Gouthro. “It's weird that we haven't received an email regarding the Apple Schools program, but if there's funding available we will apply for it.”

Gouthro adds there is a lot of support from the territorial government for funding the school's food program.
